PSP Tutorial - Swimming Dolphin Globe

This tutorial has been reproduced by very kind permission from its author, Jacs. Her beautiful web site can be seen at www.JacsGraphics.com

The skill level required is : INTERMEDIATE

I made this originally for a lady in a newsgroup. Then I thought about it and what a great tutorial it would be!
ALL Images here are ©Jacs Graphics however what you make from this tutorial is yours to do with as you please.

This tutorial assumes you have a good working knowledge of PSP and was written for PSP 7.

Items you will need to complete this tutorial.

Paint Shop Pro 7: Get it here
Eyecandy 3: Get it here (It used to be free .. now you need to purchase EyeCandy 4000 from AlienSkin)
The Background : Get it here
Dolphin Globe Tubes : Get the ones we have used here
And most importantly your imagination!

Various underwater tubes. Alan at PSP-Tubes.com has very graciously put the bottom and side coral tubes into the free section of his site so they would be free for everyone to download =0)

(A 30 day membership to PSP-Tubes.com is only $4.95, check it out)

Ready to go? Great! Let's get started! Remember all images have been resized and optimized to reduce download time so they will look fuzzy.

Open a new image 500x500 pixels transparent background.

Using your preset shapes tool: elipse draw a nice big circle. Leave just enough room for the base.
Position the circle near the top and convert to a raster layer. Now flood fill with the page background. Selections: Select All and Selections: Float, now save your selection to Alpha Channel. This will make the rest very easy.

Using Eyecandy 3, Go to the swirl filter. I used these settings. Play around with them until you get a look you like.

And apply an inner bevel using these settings

Great, you are finished with the base for your image =0) Let's add our base. Position it as you like.

Now let's add the coral_38 , this gives it the look of an ocean bottom.
Open the tube in PSP and copy and paste it as a new layer onto your globe. You will probably notice it is much larger than your base should be, but we will take care of that =0)
Position it however you like, then go to Selections: Load from Alpha Channel Selections: Invert and hit delete. Select None. The excess is all gone =0)

Now you can just pull that layer down underneath the base layer. Perfect!

SAVE YOUR WORK !!

We are going to repeat that same process with our coral tubes, placing them and loading the selections, inverting, and deleting. Arrange your tubes however you like them. Just remember to leave enough room for your dolphin to swim. Here is mine as I did it.

I have added all of my coral, a starfish, stingray, and some fishies. I like the way it looks so I am going to continue on. if you are happy with it then Merge visible layers and continue onto the next step. If not, play with it until you are and then you'll be ready to go =0)

SAVE YOUR WORK !!

Let's make our Dolphin swim!

This can get rather tricky, but just be patient - you'll get it. Open up the dolphin tubes. You will see one has it's tail in the up position and one in the down position. You will alternate these to make your dolphin swim. Remember, you can add as many frames as you like, but the more you add the larger the size will be to download.
The first thing you need to do is duplicate (Shift+D) your globe image about 5 times. You may need more, so if you get to the last blank globe and still have more to do then duplicate it a few more times before adding to it.
Take your first dolphin image and place it so that only the head is showing. Then do the selections to remove the excess. You will want to sort of line them up. Dolphins don't swim in a straight line, but they dont swim in a zig zag either .. LOL. To do this I go to normal viewing, place my first dolphin on as I like it, then pull up a blank globe and place it next to the first one to try to line it up a bit better. Like this:

It probably won't be perfect, but that's ok =0)

Ok, so on each blank frame. You want to move your dolphin so much, like it would move if it was swimming, lining it up as well as you can, and go all the way across the globe until all that's left is the tail.

Here is part of mine

I ended up with 11 images total. Now what you want to do is go back to each image and merge visible layers & save them as a .psp file. It is easiest to number them 1-11, or however you want to do it, just so you know which order to put them in in animation shop.

Now would be the time to test your swimming. Go to animation shop and choose the animation wizard. I have outlined what should be selected in each screen.
1. Same size as first image frame.
2. Transparent.
3. Upper left corner of the frame & With the canvas color.
4. Yes, Repeat the animation indefinately & enter 10-15 into the box.
5. Choose your images & finish.

If you are happy with it go ahead and continue. If not, go back and undo the layer merging, fix what you don't like, re-merge and re-test.

To add the sparkles and the bubbles go back to each frame. Use your picture tube tool to add bubbles around where the dolphin is swimming and sparkles wherever you like. These will go straight onto the merged image and will not create a new layer so you won't have to worry about re-merging. Re-save all of the images as you finish, then take them to animation shop and use the same settings. If your globe is to big, while in animation shop hit CTRL+S and resize it =0)

SAVE YOUR WORK !!

Congratulations, you have made a swimming dolphin globe!
